My parents? experiences during the war were horrific, even though they were not
interred in concentration camps. My dad?s entire family (parents and 9 sisters)
were murdered when the Germans destroyed their town in Poland. My father and his
younger brother escaped behind the Russian lines, and ended up in a refugee camp
in Samarkand. He met my mother there?she had escaped with her father from
Lithuania. Conditions were terrible and they had numerous near-death incidents,
even in the lawless period after the armistice. They finally made their way to a
DP camp in Venice, where I was born, and thence they emigrated to Canada.
