My parents were the nuclear physicist Charles Walton Gilbert [1910-1983] and Irene (neé Gunn) [1909-1979].
Before the age of six I lived in Exeter, Devonshire, England;
Ottery St. Mary, Devonshire, England; Dorval, Quebec, Canada; and our family was one of the first to live in Deep River, Ontario, Canada.
In 1947 we moved to Cambridge, England and from 1948-1959 I lived in Withington, Manchester, England. After going to Jesus College, Cambridge Universitiy (1959-1962) and Brasenose College, Oxford University (1962-1965), I went for two years to the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington, USA.
