The Car 54 poster was created by Proctor and Gamble, advertising a contest they ran in 1962.
The contest asked for the best TSP tour through the 33 cities indicated on the poster (the travel distances were taken from a Rand McNally map).
A TSP researcher, Gerald Thompson (Carnegie Mellon University) was one of the winners.
